Sindhudurg
district is situated between Latitudes 15.37 and 16.40 North, and
longitudes 73.19 and 74.13 East. It is boarded by the Arabian Sea
on the West and Sahyadri hill ranges to the East with a total area
of 5,087 sq.km.
Sindhudurg is in the Kokan area of Maharastra having picturesque
stretch of land on the west cost of India, endowed with the beautiful
seashore, picturesque Mountains and scenic natural beauty and known
for tropical fruit like the world famous Alphonso mangoes, cashews,
Jamuns etc.
It consist of 8 Talukas viz. Deogad, Vaibhavwadi, Dodamarg, Kankavali,
Malvan, Ukudal, Venjerla and Sawantwadi, carved out of Ratangiri
and Kolhapur district.
The average rainfall is very high but almost all the rainwater
causes surface run off, due to undulating topography and lack of
any water impounding major and medium structures. The irrigated
area is only 28% through well and small channels.
The area is largely rural populated with 93% of rural population
of the total population of 832000. Apart from tropical fruits like
mangoes, cashew, coconut, paddy are the main crops. 75% of total
land holding in the district, are held by small and marginal farmers.
With 1496 primary schools and 179 secondary schools the district
has ranked with one of the very few district of country in achieving
100% literacy. Health care system is augmented by 8 hospitals and
38 primary health centres. Agriculture, fisheries, horticulture
and animal husbandry are the main occupation of the people. Fishing
is the main occupation of the people of 3 talukas, Diogad, Malvanand
Vengurla having 160 Km of cost line. Poultry and goat rearing are
the sustenance actively of the poor people.
National
Highway 17 passes through this area. With 7 railway stations, a
105 Km stretch of Konkan Railway line passes through this district.
It has good road and rail links with Goa and Bombay.
With abundance of natural resources, beautiful seacoast, adequate
infrastructure, cent percent literacy and very god law and order
situation, this rich area is inhabited by poor people.
A stimulus of newer technologies in the area of fruit processing
and research, animal husbandry, irrigation and watershed programmes,
fisheries etc. will catalyse the development of this area. Promotion
of tourism, rural & cottage industries, handcraft will give
a boom to the growth and development of this area.
